Why you should love “fake gamer girls”.

A few days ago the following status popped up on my Facebook wall.

UntitledI’ve blocked the person’s identity because it’s unimportant, what is important is the fact prior to this point I wasn’t really aware of the concept of a “fake gamer girl” I’d heard the phrase fake geek girl before, but Luke McKinney already sucker punched those fuckers so hard they’re still shitting diamonds, however since this is the Knights of Gaming, I figured someone needed to address this topic and explain why people like the person above are total fucking morons.

It seemed to me like most of the hostility towards these fake gamer girls stemmed from the fact they claimed to be gamers, while only having a casual knowledge of the entire scene in general and that they only latched onto gaming because it’s popular and cool. Now at the age of 22 I never thought I’d say this, but the person quoted above is 16 and I noticed that this trend is prevalent among guys that age, but back in my day (jesus I feel old), games weren’t fucking cool. Gaming today is a completely acceptable social endeavour that attractive women will openly associate themselves with, if you’re complaining about that, fuck you, I would have killed for that shit when I was 16.

But okay, maybe the hostility stems from the fact that they have an offensively limited view of gaming which I could accept they’re not a real gamer because they only play Pokemon, they never played Final Fantasy 7 or Wind Waker. But wait, you’re not a real gamer because you never played the original Final Fantasy. Well, you’re not a real gamer because you never played the original Japanese version on an imported console. Nuh uh, you’re not a real gamer because you never played Pac-Man in an arcade.

See how stupid that looks? When your argument is “this person doesn’t know as much as me, therefore they’re not allowed to be a part of my subculture” you’re just starting a dick measuring contest and take it from a guy named Smallwood, there will always be a bigger dick out there. Trying to say someone isn’t a real gamer by stating that they’ve not played the same games as you is like calling someone gay because they haven’t fucked your girlfriend. What makes the games you’ve played anymore legitimate than the ones they have?

If I was a real gamer I'd have based this on Final Fantasy 6.

If I was a real gamer I’d have based this on Final Fantasy 6.

But okay, maybe it’s nothing to do with dick measuring, maybe it’s all down to the fact they’re not a real fan, they don’t understand the culture and it’s subtleties, all they did was buy a t-shirt and a copy of Pokemon. Well, they still bought a copy of Pokemon, right? If you ran a charity and person came up to give you money would you berate and hassle them about whether they understood exactly what your charity stood for before you took it? No, because you’d have a fist shaped hole in the face part of your soul before you got half way through that conversation. You’d take their money and politely thank them for supporting something you believe in. Now replace the word charity with gaming.

Just because someone doesn’t understand exactly what gaming is about, it doesn’t change the fact  that they’re still supporting it with their money and time. We need the casual crowd, if you think something can survive purely off of the back of its die-hard fans and enthusiasts, go try to buy a Mega Man game.

But maybe you dislike fake gamer girls because they’re only, as aforementioned, latching onto gaming because it’s popular, well that’s just a necessary part of something being popular. Every subculture and group interest has them, they’re called posuers and they’re not a new thing. Skateboarders have to put up with people using a skateboard as a fashion accessory, punk fans have to deal with people wearing an anarchy badge without understanding it and hip hop fans have to deal with Dr Dre fans. The fact gaming even has posuers at all only means that it has been legitimised as a subculture and if you’re truly a fan of gaming, you’d like that because it means gaming is now something people want to associate themselves with. Those people being attractive women is just the icing on a cake made of explosions and polygons.

However, I couldn’t discuss this topic without touching on the misogyny, the beautiful, beautiful misogyny. The fact that this term is applied exclusively to girls while there are hundreds if not thousands of guys out there who do exactly the same thing, guys who only play FIFA or COD and claim to be gamers, no one insults them. Which is where someone says “guys don’t upload pictures of themselves with an Xbox controller saying “lol, such a nerd XD!””  which is an excellent point. But guys also don’t have to deal with threats of rape every time they log on, their mothers do, but that’s a different story, so I personally give girls a pass on that one. But others don’t, others think these women should be able to name the lead character from every Final Fantasy as well as detail the timeline of Zelda because they call themselves a gamer. The fact that you need to do anything other than play games to prove you’re a gamer is a sentence so innately fucking stupid this paragraph is now required teaching material in the state of Texas.

If you play games, you are a gamer. Every person you accuse of being a fake gamer, still bought a console and supported the industry, you should be thankful for that.

  1. Some of the double standards out there are just insane. Hell by some of these so called “rules” I (an avid gamer, a game journalist, reviewer and etc) would be considered “not a real gamer” I love the perspective you wrote this from and I genuinely enjoyed reading it!

  2. Seriously what sort of games do I need to be playing to be considered a real gamer, assuming that blokes who play FIFA, COD, Creed, Borderlands, BF etc are not?
Should I get out my 64 and play Zelda OOT 24/7? These games are polished, easy to pick up and easy to play. As a law student with little time, this is really all I need. My favourite games all followed that track, they were easy to play and good with friends: the likes of Mario Kart 64, Goldeneye, Pokemon (when it was cool), Timesplitters, COD4, Pro Evo and FIFA.

I apologise for going off track a bit but the point does go to your article: what do women specifically need to do to qualify as gamers? Play video games is my only requirement. Maybe we should create another tag for people who hate us “mainstream” gamers, the hipsters. Oh wait…

  3. Am I the only one that remembers the term ‘Gramer’. That’s what these girls are and there’s nothing wrong with that. Popular games are popular for a reason.

My wife is a huge gamer, but she does take issue with some ‘gamer girls’ who do come across as girls who are just trying to get attention from guys any way possible, and the “hehe I play games, AND HAVE BOOBS” is quite an easy angle to play, and if you don’t think that’s a thing, I remember at a ‘gamer girl’ asking what WoW was, while working at a midnight launch of Litch King.

The reality is though, women are getting more and more evenly represented in gaming as each generation grows into it. By the time my 4 year old is 16, being a gamer girl will no longer be a novelty (That said, finding a girl who plays D&D will still be damn hard).

If anything this is good news for the general population of gamers, this means it’s only going to get easier to find a girl who won’t complain every time you pick up a controller. As a gamer, I can say that I definitely wouldn’t be married to my wife if she and I didn’t share a mutual love of games, and just like movies and TV, part of that is accepting your partner likes games you don’t. Just be thankful that you can game, unlike some of my friends who sold their collections and bought wedding rings.

  4. Good article! It seems that people are getting a tad too possessive of their subcultures and fandoms, trying to establish exclusivity and superiority by ousting or shaming other members or fans. One Direction fans are forming lynch mobs to ostracize ‘lesser’ fans, foodies are reaching new heights of snobbery by tearing down each subpar food blog or restaurant review they come across…. Why would the supposedly superior members of a group try to oust the ‘lesser’ people when the lesser ones legitimize the hierarchy in the group? Would the king of the castle feel half as superior without his dirty rascals?

  6. Nice attempt. But i’m sure that strawman isn’t really giving you an argument.

This issue here has been people who aren’t actually gamers pretending to be gamers. It’s becoming an exclusive girls thing in which girls are dressing up and pretending to be geeky because they think it’s “cool”. It’s a fad, like Emo. Nobody has an issue with girl gamers. And people have always had an issue with those who just randomly have played games, in comparison to actually play games as a hobby.

The issue is that a lot of people who were beaten up for being gamers, who were ostracised, who were bullied, are now meeting those same people at cons. Dressed up in mass-produced, mainstream gear of games they’ve never even PLAYED.

The worst part? Apparently people can’t grasp that the sad little tarts going “ooh, i’m a gamer he he” with Facebook profile pics of her holding up shitty game (that they clearly got second hand cheaply from a pawn shop) cartridges over her nipples without ever having played a game and some girl who has gaming and geeking things on her profile.

You see, one is a fake and is not a gamer. The other is and acts just like every other guy gamer out there, not desperately trying to gain attention for being a girl just because she’s a girl.

  7. I’m a much bigger gamer than most people at my school (and i go to a HUGE school) and i still get the sexist comments saying girls cant game or im a fake and i game coz its cool. Ill have them know ive been gaming since i was 2 and my bro got a ps1 and game boy. I find this outrageous coming from people who are complete noobs who can only play cod and cant figure out how to plug in a game console, make an online account or care about anything but xbox and cod and criticise anything that isn’t either (like ps3 and skyrim, metal gear rising, borderlands, last of us, uncharted, battlefield, etc)

  8. I actually have the right to call myself a gamer girl. Since my older bro got his first game console and handheld 13 years ago, ive played over 300 games ranging from pokemon to starfox to pikmin to spyro to cod to battlefield to metal gear rising, tf2 the witcher, elder scrolls, metal gear solid, hitman, limbo and tons of random shit no ones heard about. It may not be impressive to some people but im only 14 and i have to buy my stuff with my own money or rely on ps plus. My parents buy me nothing but buy/bought my bro tons of games and most of the consoles i own
